Affordable Solar

Our Affordable Solar Program ensures that low-income households, including renters in subsidized housing, can benefit from on-site solar energy without the burden of upfront costs or loans.

We help reduce energy bills and promote energy equity. This program is designed to make solar energy accessible to communities that have historically struggled to afford or directly access the benefits of their own rooftop solar, fostering both economic and environmental benefits for participating members. CEF uses incentives from Xcel Energy (and local governments where available) to provide residential solar installations for income-qualified residents with no up-front cost. The solar energy produced offsets energy the residents would have purchased from Xcel and we charge 30-40% less for that energy.

Support For Underserved Communities

The program specifically works with communities that have been historically excluded from the benefits of renewable energy, promoting social and economic equity.

Participants benefit from lower monthly utility costs, providing immediate and long-term financial relief.

No Upfront Costs

Removes the financial burden associated with the initial investment in solar energy systems, making it accessible for low-income households.

Environmental Stewardship

By increasing the adoption of solar energy, the program helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supports the fight against climate change.

Increased Energy Independence

Households gain greater control over their energy sources, reducing dependence on traditional energy providers.

Long-term savings

The cost savings from reduced energy bills accumulate over time, providing substantial financial benefits to participating subscribers.

Am I Eligible?

To determine eligibility, the property owner will need to provide:

Once a building’s suitability has been determined CEF will discuss the program with residents and find people interested in signing up (this step is not necessary if the landlord pays the individually metered utilities). CEF will determine the system size each unit is eligible for based off of square footage or historic usage, then submit an application to for funding around the 1st of the year. Energy bill payers whose projects qualify for funding will be notified and sign final agreements allowing CEF to secure financing and construct the systems.
